Propolis

Propolis

What is propolis?

Propolis is a unique bee product, also known as bee putty resin. It contains more than 500 chemical compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids and terpenes, which give it its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The Vitalmix also contains other health-promoting nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins (A, C and E) and minerals such as magnesium and potassium. The special thing about the substance is that the exact chemical composition can vary depending on the geographical region and plant species from which the bees collect the resin. However, this affects the research situation, as many studies do not specify which propolis was used.

Where is propolis found?

The mixture is produced by bees and is therefore an animal product. It is a type of resin that bees collect and use to seal their hives and protect them from pathogens. It is available in honey, beeswax and in various food supplements.

What benefits does propolis offer the human body?

A number of studies have examined its health benefits, with many pointing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Wound healing

As already mentioned, propolis is used to protect beehives from pathogens. It is therefore no wonder that it contains antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory flavonoids, which could support the healing of burn wounds, for example. A 2019 analysis found that propolis could support collagen production in the skin.

Cold sores

A publication from 2016 showed that topical application of bee resin three times a day healed cold sores faster than a placebo cream. In addition, the propolis cream not only reduced the amount of herpes viruses in a person's body, but also protected the test subjects from future outbreaks.

Oral Health

Bee putty resin could promote oral health by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and inflammation in the mouth. In a recent 2021 analysis, based on in vitro (laboratory), in vivo (animal) and ex vivo (human cells outside the body) studies and human clinical trials, it was analyzed and confirmed that propolis has the potential to be a valuable tool in dentistry and in the maintenance of oral health by helping to fight mouth and throat infections and tooth decay.

Propolis & Longevity

In terms of human health and longevity, propolis can help strengthen the immune system. Its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties can be used to fight various types of infections, contributing to overall health.

In addition, propolis was used in the past by the Egyptians for embalming to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi on mummies. This suggests its potential preservative properties that could contribute to longevity.

However, it is important to note that propolis can cause contact allergies in some cases, especially with intensive external use. Therefore, the use of propolis should always be done with caution.
